Résumé de la justification scientifique
The meeting will gather two dozens people around the consolidation of a JWST proposal on the study of AGN.
The scientific motivation is to understand the fueling of supermassive black holes with the accompanying AGN phase that is fundamental to galaxy evolution. A dusty molecular torus is the central structure in a cycle that brings gas inward from the host (inflow) and drives part of it out through the influence of the AGN (outflow). The torus is not a simple static structure but rather turbulent and outflowing with a significant fraction of the dust emission oriented along the polar axis. The circumnuclear regions of AGN also contain large reservoirs of molecular gas with star formation activity, but the connection to the torus remains uncharacterized. The JWST proposal that the GATOS consortium is preparing aims at probing the gas flow cycle (inflow/outflows) and polar dust emission in an ultra-hard X- ray-selected sample of nearby Seyferts covering the 1.7-28micron spectral range.
The meeting will adress the question of targets selection and justification, as well as the definition of several ground-based observing programs to prepare the optimum exploitation of the future JWST observations. It is expected that several young reaserchers (PhD or postdoc) will attend the meeting. LESIA is involved in GATOS and, at the time of the launch of JWST, it is expected that postdoc and/or PhD will be involved in the exploitation of the GATOS observations.
